Youth 1
“Hey, my name is [bleep]. I feel like my life is falling apart. There’s genuinely no point anymore in trying anything. I give up.”

Youth 2
“Hi. I feel like I'm not accepted in any group really. Most of the people at my school are white and so it makes it really hard to fit in. I don’t have any friends really.”

Youth 3
“I’ve been trans for a while now and almost all my friends know. I’ve been open about it at school too. I’m worried about seeing more classmates in-person. I’m scared of what they might say.”

Youth 4
“With COVID going on, I can't get out of the house so it’s hard to see friends and stuff. At home there’s just a bunch of yelling and fights and it makes my depression even worse.”

Youth 5
“I’m having trouble sleeping. I hear gunshots out my window at night. My brother is out there and I’m always afraid he’s not gonna come home in the morning. It’s ugly in the streets.”

YouthLine Moderator 1
“It seems like you’re really hurting, and maybe it feels like there’s no way forward.”

YouthLine Moderator 2
“It sounds like you’re feeling judged by people just because of your heritage.”

YouthLine Moderator 3
“It’s scary to come out when you don’t know how people will react.”

YouthLine Moderator 4
“It sounds like you are going through a really tough time.”

YouthLine Moderator 5
“Those are really scary thoughts to have – all the violence can feel too close when someone you love is out there.”

YouthLine Moderator 1
“Sometimes when it feels like there’s no way forward, people start to consider suicide. Is that true for you?”

Youth 1
“I don’t want to die. I just don’t even know who could help me.”

YouthLine Moderator 2
“Changing schools is so hard anyway. Is there anyone you’ve connected with?”

Youth 2
“Yeah, there’s one girl in my math class and she let me use her pencil and seems pretty cool. Maybe I can talk to her more?”

Youth 3
“I think it will take people time to get used to it, but, you know, they’ll adjust eventually.”

YouthLine Moderator 3
“That’s a great attitude to have!”

YouthLine Moderator 4
“Is there someplace you feel safe?”

Youth 4
“I’m in my room and that feels okay.”

YouthLine Moderator 5
“Have you tried to talk to your brother about your fears?”

Youth 5
“I tell him not to go out, but I guess I haven’t told him what it does to me.”

Youth 1
“I’m gonna ask at school tomorrow about seeing a counselor.”

Youth 2
“I really appreciate talking with you.”

Youth 3
“Talking with you has made me feel really validated and understood.”

Youth 4
“I’m feeling a lot better than I was earlier.”

Youth 1
“Thank you talking to me. If you weren’t here, I wouldn’t be either.”

Youth 5
“Thank you for caring. It still feels hard. But I know I’m not alone.”
